About Christian Science
What is Christian Science?
It is “the law of God, the law of good… the rule of universal harmony.” It is also a method of healing through prayer; an explanation of how healings in The Bible happened; a day to day spiritual study and discovery; a religion, a philosophy, a way of life.
Is it Christian?
Yes. It is based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and how they can be applied specifically and effectively in every aspect of modern day life.
So how is it a science?
“a systematically organized body of knowledge on any subject” – Oxford Compact English Dictionary. Science involves study, perception, inspiration, questioning, practical application and proof – in this case of Old and New Testament teachings.
Do you worship Mrs Eddy?
No. She was very concerned not to become a charismatic leader, and she had no time for personality cults. She set her church up so that no one person could become more powerful than anyone else, and consistently guided her students to study the Bible and her textbook for answers to their questions.
Is Mrs Eddy’s book more important than the Bible?
No. The Bible was the focus of Mrs Eddy’s own deep study and prayer and the source of her discovery of the Science of Christianity. She says it “…contains the recipe for all healing.” You could say that Science and Health “spells out the recipe”, which was lost for a long time because people had stopped practising Christian healing for centuries. Her motive in writing her book was to enable everyone everywhere to have access to this Science for themselves, and to experience healing as she had done.
I don’t like organised religion…
But you don’t have to adopt a religion to take a look at Science and Health. It was in fact available for many years before there was even a Church to publish it. And nowadays you can find it in bookshops, libraries, and on-line on www.spirituality.com. You can read it without having to go to church, but if you like the idea of worshipping in a congregation or would like to meet others who think along these lines, the church provides that opportunity.
But you don’t believe in going to doctors?
Christian Scientists do practise healing through prayer alone; but no one is prohibited by anyone else from seeing a doctor if they want to because that’s an individual decision. Everyone is free to work things out in the way they feel best. And we’re always law-abiding when it comes to notifiable diseases and children’s cases.
So what’s in it for me?
A spiritual outlook with practical answers. Whatever your field of activity, you’ll find something of interest.
